A Watermelon Grows in Brooklyn

About the Author
Michael Grande was born in Brookyn in 1971. Brooklyn holds a special place in Michaels heart. As a child he would look forward to an annual block party that took place every August. These days, block parties seem to be a thing of the past. Back then, block parties were the epitome of a Brooklyn summer. Neighbors would begin collecting money in May to hire a DJ, apply for a New York City permit to close down the street, purchase prizes for the games that were played and if you were lucky, have a fire hydrant sprinkler setup for us to jump in to.
One year, at around ten years old Michael decided to grow a watermelon for his block party. It was the end of June and school was letting out for the summer. While having a catch outside his house with his dad, the idea of growing a watermelon and sharing it with everyone on the day of the block party became a reality. Michael and his dad went out and planted a watermelon seed in front of his house. Michael wanted all of the neighbors to see the watermelon he would be growing for that big day.
As the story goes Michael woke up the day of the block party to a giant watermelon (with a little help from his dad). Decades later the story of how that watermelon grew that summer still remains a great memory and reminder of that special day, as a son and as a father.
I hope you enjoy this short story as much as Michael did telling it.

Hi Mike. Bought one for Alexa and Mia and one for Luca. Jen read it to Alexa last night. She loved it. The colors are so vibrant and catch their eyes immediately. The story itself is terrific. Shows the kids the love a mom and dad have for their kids. Good Luck with the book. Great dedication!
I read this book to my kids and now we are going to plant a watermelon in OUR Brooklyn yard....history repeats itself
A beautiful story of the great lengths a parent will go to make their child happy. The pages are alive with color! A must read for children or parents to read to their child they will love looking at the pictures.
I'm 7 years old and in 2nd grade. I read this book out loud to my sister. We both liked it a lot. I liked that the boy and his father worked together to do something fun for the block party. And I liked that the dad came up with a creative way to make his son happy. The son was so excited and really happy! I thought the illustrations were really fun.
I am 5 years old and in preschool, so my sister read this to me (and my mommy is typing what I say now). This book was fun and cute. The daddy made magic for his son and that made me smile.
Excellent book to read.
